Scouting BSA 101
Scouts BSA (formerly, Boy Scouts of America) provides the nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training, which helps young people be “Prepared. For Life.®” The Scouting organization is composed of nearly 2.3 million youth members between the ages of 7 and 21 and approximately 960,000 volunteers in local councils throughout the United States and its territories.
OLPH Troop 57 has been in existence since 1948, and has been a pivotal part of formation for hundreds of youth. Come check us out!
Adventure
At Troop 57, we strive to challenge the scouts both mentally and physically by teaching skills that truly prepare the youth for life. Whether it’s learning new climbing skills or carrying a canoe on your shoulders through the Minnesota wilderness, scouts are continually challenged to be better every day.
Leadership
Unlike many youth programs, the scouts are the leaders of the unit. With appropriate adult oversite, the youth plan the calendar, organize the activities, and work together to make the troop successful. As scouts mature, they take on more leadership and pass on what they’ve learned to younger scouts.
Character
Character counts! At Troop 57, we reinforce how we represent a much bigger cause than just ourselves. We represent Scouts USA, OLPH Church, and next generation of leaders. Who we are and how we conduct ourselves should represent the best that we can be.
The Troop 57 Difference….
Boys & Girls Welcome!
Troop 57 has a long history at OLPH. The boys troop was established in 1948, and we proudly founded a girls unit (Troop 57G) in 2020. Both Troops have their own youth leadership but collaborate on meetings and activities.
Troop Activities
The Troops currently meet (outdoors) every two weeks to work on rank advancements, play games, and prepare for upcoming events. Weekend campouts occur monthly, throughout the entire year. Merit badge work, and patrol meetings occur as coordinated by the scouts.
Patrol Method
Scouts are grouped into smaller teams (Patrols) based on their age/school year. They work together during campouts and meetings to advance together. Each patrol gets to choose their name and create a patrol flag. The Troop 57B patrols are: Golden Eagles, Otters, Nuclear Narwhals, and Flaming Phoenix! Troop 57G has the Strawberry Cows!
